A Short Buddhist Teaching: Emptiness and Compassion as Antidotes to Destructive Emotions

SUMMIT SESSIONS

His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Thupten Jinpa, PhD

A Short Buddhist Teaching: Emptiness and Compassion as Antidotes to Destructive Emotions

Who else would enjoy this summit?

What You'll Learn

  • In this short and potent 8 minute teaching, listen as His Holiness speaks about his personal daily practice of generating bodhicitta - “altruistic awakening mind” - which is said to naturally fulfill “the benefit of oneself and others.”

  • Explore how we tend to grasp onto a projected “independently existing reality ‘out there’” and how this false assumption is the root of many of our destructive emotions

  • Learn how we can free ourselves from these destructive emotions through the two pronged approach of cultivating awareness of emptiness, and generating compassion or “exchanging oneself for others.”

Emptiness + Compassion= Happiness. Thanks for the magic formula!

My struggle has been starting from a place of self-sacrifice and learning self care, self compassion. This is not addressed by the Dalai Lama here or by much of Buddhism in general. This may have to do with gender stereotyping as traditionally it has been women who have been conditioned to be self-sacrificing and Buddhism has been a male-oriented religion (like all the others). As Khrishnamurti said, “The truth is a pathless land.” because, though we may be headed to the same place, we are all starting from different places.

I would love to read the texts HH Dalai Lama refers to in his daily practice. I have just finished reading The Book of Joy which was based on a week of conversations between HH Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. I love the humanistic approach to sharing the teachings of Buddhism in a way that is accessible to everyone without the cultural and religious context getting in the way of the experience of what is at the deepest core of our shared humanity. Thank you very much for this summit and the aspiration to bring this emotional well being to everyone on the planet. Such a beacon of hope is especially needed during these troubled and troubling times.

Given the millions of dysfunctional families in the US and around the world and the PTSD that arises from it, what does Buddhism have to offer? Buddha left his family. Our society is torn with guilt, a confused sense of duty, confused about what is right and wrong. In most of my work, dysfunctional families cause the most pain and suffering. They are also the biggest blockages in meditation practices. How does one work through those emotional knots? Many thanks!

With a compassionate and empty heart and mind. Do not take things personell. There are dysfunctional families and people and there are loving and kind families and people. People are the way they are. Do not try to change them, but try to change yourself. That is all, you can do.
All the best for you and your work!

Put me in mind of the meditation practices in the book, The Light Within by Lawrence Freeman. These talks and seeing his holiness, the Dali Lama, reminded me that without emptying one’s mind on a daily basis, the practice of compassion would probably so much harder to come by. Especially for oneself. So nice. Namaste

Since I started following his holiness example, upon waking up every morning, generating a thought that my existence is to benefit others, I have been a happier person.
    Thanks for your teaching🙏🙏🙏

Thank you! The aspiration to be of benefit to others has also helped me to free myself from my negativity-proneness. I have a long way to go on the road of emptiness and happiness, but just being on the road has a beneficial effect on my mood (and is also beneficial to those around me).
I am so grateful for all the beautiful and inspiring talks on this summit

In Mahayana Buddhism, compassion is often discussed in terms of absolute and relative compassion. Absolute compassion is compassion in the light of emptiness: all beings are empty; all beings are, by virtue of their empty nature, already liberated and pure. As the sutra says, suffering is empty, and relief from suffering is also empty.
Yes, perfect sense of emptiness + compassion = happiness

I love the Dahli Lama. I think I understand the importance of compassion. But I still don’t understand emptiness

  26. Ranjana May 5, 2021 at 6:00 pm - Reply

Emptiness to me is getting rid of judgment by the thinking brain about what or how you feel. Unmodified feelings are raw data about our inner being and they tell us about our inner selves. Good and bad. When you can accept your own vice and virtue (we ALL have both), you inch closer to having compassion for anyone else’s failings. You realize that they are humans too and a work-in-progress. Therein lie the beginnings of forgiveness, of yourself and others.

In gratitude to His Holiness for sharing his wisdom and Dr. Jinpa’s translation. What a wonderful and deeply inspiring talk. Thank you very much. His Holiness spoke of certain stanzas in Chandrakirit “Entering the MIddle Way” that he studies and finds to be so important. I am wondering if it would be possible to post these stanzas for us or provide a reference so we know which ones His Holiness is referring to? I would really like to follow up on these and study them myself. Thank you again.

Me parece fundamental lo que nos propone el Dalai Lama de incluir en las meditaciones diarias la compasión y la vacuidad, porque nos permitirán reducir nuestro egoísmo y fomentar las bases de nuestra felicidad

Thank you! I keep listening to this, yet I am missing I feel an important part of the message from the Dalai Lama. It is two speakers and presenters here. I wish we had the dialogue with both people fully visible as each speaks, and we could see and hear their interactions as each hears the other in languages they both speak, though the translator is the master of translation. It seems the Dalai Lama speaks through both his presence and his words, and something is lost when we do not speak and understand Tibetan or see him as his meaning is clarified yet his relationship with his translator, no longer a monk, yet having worked together for so many years, this too is precious and brings meaning to what is understood.
