These words from the Dali Lama are consistent with mind body medicine’s understanding of stress vs relaxation systems. When in a stress neurophysiological state, negative emotions dominate, the PFC is not very accessible, the amygdala is in the driver’s seat—in other words, no access to discernment (clear logical thinking and planning, reasoning, problem solving, positive emotions, self o from etc. When relaxed, the Pafac takes over again from amygdala which reverts to its quiet role , not triggering the neurophysiological responses to threat. Emotions are positive as is reasoning & all the other uniquely human neurological abilities offer by a mind led by the prefrontal cortex. When we act from here, from positive emotions, including compassion, it is energizing & per Barbara Fredrickson’s theory, broadens our perspectives and creates human bonds of mutual support.

Thank you ver much for such precious words! Hope we can introduce all this mind training towards positive emotions and compassion into all school systems and our own homes…If trained and taught since an early age, the next generations will truly experience this embracing sense of compassion to all humanity. Let’s start now from our own close social circles…

Great insights from HH. The notions of interconnectedness, oneness, unconditional love and so on are embedded in them. Ideally, the evolution of our societies and the planet should come from a deeper understanding from the part of everyone.

Everyone has been so articulate on such an intangible subject. However, every time I hear his Holiness speak it rises above all the theories and in the most direct terms brings everything into view. I noted he refused to embrace constructive anger- but in the most graceful way. My interpretation : anger creates imbalance (dis-ease) within ourselves- even when the intention is good. Instead, compassion can be used to solve complex issue but creates balance within (wellness). Compassion as described by Buddhist texts- not western interpretation that is. Thank you to all for a remarkable dialog.

I always enjoy the presence of His Holiness. In 2005 I was privileged to attend a session held at a very large venue (sports area ??) in Washington, D.C. It was part of “Meditate, D.C.”–a weeklong event with many wonderful presentations held over the entire area. That was 16 years ago and he seems to not have aged one bit!

Sharp brain is not sufficient to bring us a lasting joy. We need both warm heart and sharp brain. Thus, we should have this kind discussion to bring up a balanced humanity to make a better place for us and generations to come.

I am so grateful to His Holiness and the scientists and all the others who made this conference available to me in my remote rural home, more isolated than usual by covid restrictions. I feel joy and renewal of purpose (the path of compassion) and my body responds with tears of joy. After a long career in education and environmental advocacy, I am retired from active contact with the young people who energized me and less physically able than I was, which causes some suffering. This conference was indeed a refuge and a reminder of all the blessings I share with the life of the planet, the wisdom of more advanced Buddhists, and the simple joy of kindness.

Untill now, I don’t find any answer about personal boundaries. I feel it’s a less talked about topic that is really important. Even more so as we are connecting with alot more divers ppl and cultures in this day and age. Is it ok that Somebody harmfully behaves towards you and/or ur beloved ones? Rather be it physically, mentally or emotionally. Should we just accept and let harm lead the way by the other party? I would love to get some insight on behalf of everyone here on protecting ur beloved ones/urself/personal boundaries/protecting fellow beeings?

With love, warmth, light and kindness

    Stan

    Greetings from India!

This session has been exceptionally rewarding. Gratitude to His Holiness for all the wisdom.

This summit has been so illuminating. The need of the hour. I am sure that the practitioners, healers and the world community at large have greatly benefitted by the scientific deliberation on emotional well being in the backdrop of ancient wisdom.
It was so heartening to see the torch bearers leading the discussions, participating wholeheartedly and at the same time encouraging the young minds to talk about their work. Gratitude to all the panelists.
    More strength to the organizers.
May we all together build a more compassionate world.

Thank you for all the reminders. In my 75 years on this planet, I never tire of the reminders that help me in this process of deprogramming, decluttering of negative emotions, of reprogramming, practice which is basically purification in this life of karma. It is serendipitous that I can bridge the old and the new as a holocaust child. I am grateful to HH, and all my teachers in books and those people whom I have encountered in daily life from whom I can learn by observing how I either react or respond in a discerning manner.

I weep with joy at the opportunity to always learn.

    May all be well
    May all be happy
May all be free of suffering and the causes of suffering

Thank you for this teaching. I do wonder what the long term effect will be on children who in this time of pandemic and subsequent isolation from interaction with other children will be. I hope to see teachings come out from the Mind Life Institute in the future to offer guidance in how to heal the damage that has already been done in the past year during crucial developmental years of these children.
