About Sebene Selassie

Sebene Selassie is a teacher & author who guides people to remember and trust their belonging. Born in Ethiopia and raised in Washington DC, she began studying Buddhism 30 years ago as an undergraduate at McGill University. She has an MA from the New School, where she focused on race and cultural studies. She offers courses, workshops and retreats online and in person and teaches on the Ten Percent Happier meditation app. Her first book, You Belong: A Call for Connection is published by HarperOne.

About Shankari Goldstein

Shankari Goldstein is a 500 hour Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) and Regenerative Black Farmer. She has spent years connecting to breath, body, strength, movement, and energy to cultivate a holistic approach to being with the land. She is a Program Manager and host of the “Inspiring Minds Series” at the Mind & Life Institute, a Certified Yoga of Recovery Instructor, and an Accessible Yoga Ambassador. An avid race and environmental activist for over a decade, Shankari is an advocate for propelling the voices of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) or the Global Majority forward to share their embodied practices and wisdom.

    Thank you so much so beautiful. I loved the sounds of Brooklyn NY in the background it didn’t disturb at all I just noticed with thanks. I live in the countryside in Ireland and with Covid restrictions, I long to visit a big city hopefully I will soon.

    Thank you both for this thoughtful presentation of a clear, simple, understanding and method of grounding our inner self and connecting with all of our peoples on the earth. I was actually listening to you while I was doing my daily aerobic excise on a Nordic Track Ski Machine. I used your flexible encouragement to apply the meditation while doing this exercise and followed you. You lead me to a very unique and enriching experience while exercising. I wish you both well.

    Such a beautiful meditation on the elements! I practice Chinese Medicine which uses the philosophy of the elements in our bodies but I guess it was always a cognitive approach. “Feeling” the elements gave me a new perspective. Thank you,

    Thanks for noticing that us white folk are waking up this year. At the 8:55 minute mark. You should read the chapter The End of Misunderstanding, in the book Reconciliation by Thich Nhat Hahn. It may help you understand what you did there. Your beliefs give my heart space for compassion.

    This was my favorite talk/practice of the whole summit. I’ve often felt a lack of connection and belonging throughout my life and this was exactly the experience I needed today on many levels. Thank you for the unique and soothing practice to connect with the elements even as I sit in my own noisy apartment. I’ll be reading your book soon!
